A Game of Cat and Mouse…

I start my day with making my bed.  Simple enough, one would think.  What you don’t know is I sleep with a demon…”gasp!”  No, not what you think.  And I’m not referring to my husband; I’m referring to a tiny-colorful-furry-four-legged-minx of a demon kitty.  She is the tiniest of the seven.  Yes you read that right; I have seven felines, (for another time and another story).

So this demon is pretty much the only one who comes in my bedroom.  It’s a game to her, I think, to wake me up in the night.  Most of the time it’s because she’s lost her toy (a hairpin; her favorite thing in the world and I am NOT kidding! Erm, maybe besides me 😉 ) Or, she has forgotten where she last left me; in bed!  She will cry, and talk, and chirp, but sometimes if I am lucky, she finds me asleep, and she will snuggle down beside me, real close; like she is a part of me, and sleep like the sweet angel I know she can be.  If my breathing changes, she knows! If I open my eyes ever so slightly, she knows!  I don’t think she ever really sleeps.  I think she stays awake, and when no one is watching, she sharpens her horns she cleverly hides close to her ears.

She lays in waiting until she knows I am awake.  Wait for it…wait for it…(This is the demon coming out in her.)…and then she pounces!  If I wiggle my feet she leaps like a rabid monkey and attacks my toes. Any slight movement and I turn into her prey.  She hunts me like a lioness stalking a rabbit.  Crouching down in position ready to make her move.

This is how I wake up when she’s in the room!  So I lint roll my bed.  Hardly any hair, but that is because I have this ritual of keeping things mostly clean; mostly.  Brushing teeth and doing my kick backs (gotta tighten those buns!), my little demon watches and waits.  I ignore her thinking that if I pretend she isn’t there, she isn’t really as adorable as she looks.  I sneak a peak, and between rep forty five; dang it, she caught me looking.  She falls on her back and chirps and lets out a meow only a mother could love.  “Okay, fine! I love her!”  I rub her belly with my bare foot and she clamps down like a ninja ready to do battle with Chinese stars for nails.

I finish brushing my teeth, bun muscles are burning from the repetitions, I pick her up, (ignoring the charlie horse that wants to rear it’s head because I didn’t stretch).  She wraps herself around my arm, mimicking a python squeezing its victim. She thinks she’s doing damage, but all she’s doing is making me laugh.

I am getting dressed and she is ready, as in, as soon as I open my closet she rushes in to hide.  (As if I didn’t see that coming!)  I toss on my usual; shorts and t-shirt and I call out to her.  I’ve got a long list of things to do and she can’t stay in there.  She ignores me because she has selective hearing; which she is quite good at.  In her next life she will come back as a kid, I know this because my human children suffer from the same selective hearing.

I look for a hair pin.  And I toss it, and out from hiding she comes.  Works like a charm, every time! She finds her hair pin and brings it back to me meowing and chirping with it in her mouth.  She’s a practicing ventriloquist.  How she can talk without moving her lips!  Astonishing!  I take the pin from her and save it for later.  She bolts. And it’s my turn to crouch down.  I peek around my bathroom sink and say, “Boo!”.  She crouches too and starts to sneak.  I run over behind the door and peak out and say, “Boo!” and she sneaks closer. This goes on until one of us gets close enough to pounce.

This is the game we play.  Silly albeit, but a game I look forward to, from the time she finally settles down to sleep, to the peak-a-boo game the next morning.  My little demon makes me smile.  And everyone should start their day with a smile.

Hope you have a smile kinda day!

Paws and kisses, Koko

Facial Spray…Geranium Essential Oil, The Happy-Healing Oil!

I love geranium essential oil. It smells fabulous! It instantly uplifts me; and I almost can’t help but smile and sigh. It really is that nice. I like to put this oil in my facial oils, perfumes, lotions, and facial mists that I make. Sometimes just a swipe of this scent on my wrist is all I need to keep me going.

Geranium essential oil not only smells good it’s wonderful for the skin; It balances the facial skin at the same time it’s very healing. Geranium EO is great for a myriad of issues such as eczema, bruises, burns, wound healing, repelling insects, and getting rid of ring worm too! (among other things) Geranium also is helpful for PMS, depression, anxiety, stress. So you see why I love this oil. It’s the happy healing oil!

Make sure you trust where you are buying your oils from and they are very good oils and not synthetic. Synthetic oils can be really harmful.

If you are looking to try essential oils, give geranium essential oil a shot. It’s one of my favorite oils.  You can add a few drops to lotions and sprays you are already using.  Make a simple perfume oil and dab on your pulse points for an uplifting feel all day. (I will post a recipe on that later if anyone is interested.)

Here is a facial spray I make. Best to keep refrigerated for longer lasting freshness (also feels intensely refreshing on a warm day or hot flashes anyone?) but you will most likely use it all before it expires. Right now mine is in my apothecary cabinet which is in a dark area of the house.

You will need:
1 one 3oz bottle (The darker the better; as you can see mine is clear, but that was what I had on hand and as I’ve said, I keep it in a dark place.)

2 tablespoons witch hazel (if you can find rose witch hazel; sub out for the plain.  Smells wonderful. I like Thayers Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera Rose Petal 12 fl oz)

2 tablespoons distilled water

1/2 teaspoon glycerin

10 drops of almond oil

10 drops of geranium essential oil

5 drops of lavender essential oil

Tip: I use a small funnel and pour everything in the bottle as I go. You can use a glass measuring cup with a pour spout to mix everything together, then pour into your bottle.
Shake before using every time.
Spray liberally. I find myself spritzing my face 2-3 times a day. (Sometimes more! 😉 )
Can use as a body spray too! Nice double duty! Love that!

Sexy, Sculpted Legs!

Ways to sneak in exercise throughout your day without much effort…tip number (9)

Folding laundry can be boring and for those of you that know me, know I like to make a lot out of each moment, so here’s a great exercise that will keep your legs toned and sculpted while you fold piles and piles of laundry…

Standing lateral leg lift.

Stand tall.  Pull in tummy (Always pull in those abs. Helps protect the low back.).  And simply raise leg out to the side.  I like to tighten the muscles in the leg with each lift.  Again, I go from one leg to the other so I don’t have to count repetitions.  This exercise is a great way to strengthen the tissue around the pelvic joint, hip flexors, and those pesky saddlebags!

Of course you can do this while brushing your teeth, watching t.v., talking on the phone…Point is to get up; get moving.  Come on, you can do this.  Sexy, sculpted legs are yours for the taking!

Moth Factoids

Spotted this moth just outside my door. This moth was about 2 inches long. Beautiful in the real!

Moth Facts; Did you know?….

There are over 11,000 species of moths in the United States. That’s more than all the mammals and bird species in N. America alone!  Throughout the world; more than 160,000, more than 10 times the amount of butterfly species.

Moths are great disguisers! Evolution has taught some to mimic insects so that they are less likely to get eaten; such as, a wasp or praying mantis.  Some look like bird droppings; ewww.  I guess whatever it takes to be safe!

Moths pollinate plants.  And some like the humming-bird moth will feed on nectar from plants like verbenas and honeysuckles.

While the humming-bird moth will eat nectar most adult moths don’t eat at all.  The Luna moth doesn’t even have a mouth!

Many moths are hairy to help them maintain body temperatures; which is a must to fly.

Moths find their way by the moon and available stars.

The smallest moth has a wing span of 2-2.5 millimeters.

The Atlas moth, Hercules moth, and the Great Owlet moth are the largest in the world if you are counting their wingspans which can measure around 11-12 inches.  That would be amazing to see in person!

Many moths fly during the day.  You many not notice because they are colorful like their relative the butterfly.

It is not powder you see on your hand after touching a moth but thousands of tiny hair and scales.

Female moths lay between 60-300 eggs.

Have a wonderful day.  I’m heading out to play in dirt and if I’m lucky I will get to spot some other interesting creatures.  Peace, Koko 😉

Clean Without Toxins And Clean On The Cheap!

To clean my home can be a challenge seeing how not only are there humans running around (and a revolving door for friends); there are eleven furry beings, one reptilian, and oh I can’t forget the itty bitty dwarf hamster my son got me for a birthday gift almost 4 years ago. I clean, clean, and when I think I am done, I clean some more.

There are many products we buy at the market that can be very poisonous to our pets and if they are poisonous to our pets just think how toxic they are to us. I’ve been making my own cleaners for better part of two decades as my daughter came into this world sensitive to most everything. Before my little bouncing joy was here I can remember as a girl getting out the mop bucket and vinegar. What vinegar didn’t clean away there was baking soda. Over the years I learned and added some other things to my arsenal cleaning; peroxide and essential oils, oh and can’t forget the power of lemon (yep the whole fruit and nothing but the fruit, skin and all!

I will be posting recipes and what I do to clean my home in a part one, two, three…well you get it? I don’t want to bore you completely by giving it to you all at once!

Okay this is what I do for my sinks and tub (anything with a drain that can get gunk build up over time).

Drain cleaner—A great drain cleaner I use is baking soda, white vinegar, and hot water. I boil two pots of water. Pour one pot down the drain to loosen up debris, oils, just normal gunk that accumulates in a drain. Then I sprinkle 1/2 cup baking soda around the area (I usually take the time to rub the baking soda around (sink bowl) and clean (sink bowl) while I’m at it. Follow up with a cup of white vinegar poured all around the sink bowl. Then I pour a second pot of hot water down the drain. (You don’t have to follow up with a second pot of hot water; I just do). I do this to all sinks and tubs. Kids love watching the foaming action between baking soda and vinegar. Science project! (btw…I do this once a week or two. Better to keep the drains clean and clear then to call a plumber!)

This cleans brilliantly and just smells clean. 🙂

Hint: If you want a “smell good” smell; drop a drop or two of lemon, orange, or lavender essential oil down during last pot of water.  These essential oils disinfect too; killing those nasty germs!

Baking soda is awesome! It scrubs nice and easy without scratching. It removes most stains (I have yet to meet a stain in my house I couldn’t get out) and gunk. It is amazing polisher for shiny things like my faucets. What I love…it deodorizes! Does all that and is inexpensive too!

White vinegar is my workhorse. Gets through a lot of scum. It disinfects and is a deodorizer as well. Oh and that stuff is inexpensive as well.  Love that!

Try the drain cleaner and please let me know how it works for you…

Awesome Abs!

Ways to sneak in exercise throughout your day without much effort…tip number (8)

Another great one; when you find yourself standing in line somewhere…Pull your belly button towards your spine.  Hold for as long as you can. Rest for a few seconds and do it again.  Wanna go into the exercise deeper? Of course you do; exhale as you pull in your tummy!  I do this when I am on the computer, preparing dinner, doing dishes, pretty much anywhere and anytime.  Great for in public, no one knows what you are doing and you get to gain sexy abs! Win-win. 😉  *insert whistle here*

Kissing Frogs! Erm…Toads

LOOK WHAT I FOUND IN MY GARDEN!!!! ….

Prince Charming!

photo (49)

An American toad came to visit me in my garden!  What a treat!  I squealed like a little girl seeing this cutie.  The only difference between then and now is I didn’t put it in my pocket!

photo (51)

Can you see him smile?

photo (50)

I love him; warts and all!

Technically toads are frogs, but here are some differences between the two. Frogs have smooth skin and are usually found near water. They also are good jumpers. Frogs have mad hops! 😉

Toads have dry bumpy/wart like skin. They are not usually found near water and their jumps are short and choppy.

They both are amphibians. Amphibians are cold-blooded.

Lavender-Peppermint Lip Balm

Lavender and peppermint essential oils; I never run out of theses two oils. They are so good for so many concoctions that I make.

photo (47)

Butters, essential oils, and finished lip balm in tin (still warm) 😉

Here’s a great lip balm using these two essential oils.

1 teaspoons shea butter
3 teaspoon cocoa butter
5 drops of lavender essential oil
8 drops of peppermint essential oil (don’t worry if you put a drop or two more of either oil in; I’ve put up to 10 drops of peppermint oil in this recipe)

*This makes a soft lip balm.  If you want a harder lip balm; add 1/2 tsp of beeswax (melt down with the butters.)

*You can buy tins or jars to put the finished product in or just reuse an old lip balm container. Just wash it well (sanitize it).

*As for the ingredients; there are many places you can purchase essential oils. Just make sure they are essential oils and not scented oils. Huge difference. Stay away from scented oils/scented anything. (Toxic stuff; in my humble opinion) Mountain Rose Herbs sells many things besides essential oils. Check them out for teas too! Swanson Vitamin (on line) sells essential oils and oils such as, almond, sesame and avocado; I use for my face serums. Whole Foods has essential oils and other oils like olive oil.  I’ve bought pure cocoa butter from them before. Just read labels. Make sure you are buying the real stuff.

How to:
Melt shea butter and cocoa butter. You can use a small pot with heat set on low. You can also use a heat proof glass dish set in a pot of boiling water. What I do is use a glass measuring cup and set it in a pot of boiling water to melt my oils, butters, any facial product, or salves that I make. Makes it easy to pour into containers.

photo (46)

Small pot filled half-full of water. Heat proof measuring cup set in pot.

After your butters are melted let cool for about 5 minutes. You don’t want the heat to evaporate all your essential oils away!

Add your drops of essential oils.

Stir and pour into container. Let cool completely before capping.
There are a virtually thousands and thousands of ways to make lip balm. Experiment on your own and have fun. Orange essential oil and cocoa butter makes for a deliciously chocolaty smelling lip balm!

Finished lip balm. Solidified nicely! 😀

Watch a concert in my p.j.’s…

That’s what I am going to do tonight.  There is a concert put on through an awesome platform called Stageit.  It’s a way to broadcast shows on-line.  It’s a fabulous way for new artists as well as up and coming artists to belt out their musical talents.  I am super excited to be able to listen to great music while in the comfort of my own home.  I hear the quality may not be super fab, but come on, how cool is that!?  We can watch and listen to our favorite artists and not have to fly across the globe to see them.  Woo hoo!  I’m excited.

This is the artist I am watching tonight.  Many more to follow and I will post about them as I go.  I’m getting my cd! Check her out. 😀
